Post-Grad Possibilities: UNC’s Alumni Network

Barbrianna Adams, UNC Admissions Social Media intern, in NYC for the Media and Journalism’s Networking Trip

Here at UNC, the opportunities are endless! As a student in my fourth year at Carolina, I have picked up every flyer, attended as many shows as I could, stopped by as many events as possible and have gone to four Fall Fests those of which are flooded with clubs, groups and organizations. Throughout my time here, I have been able to grow my interests and grow as an individual. Now that I have reached my final fall semester, the reality of post-graduate life has become a new venture. However, as I embark on this new phase in my life, the UNC Alumni network is one that has given me a sense of guidance and support.

Like those who had came before me, UNC has prepared its students to enter the work force and various post graduate endeavors with confidence and knowledge. Our alumni network has proven to be strong in job placement and networking across a myriad of fields including those in the School of Media and Journalism, UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and Gillings School of Public Health. This active presence within the job market will give UNC students the foundation to build relationships of their own.

When many undergraduates are in pursuit of interning, shadowing or landing a job, it is always relieving to see a Tar Heel in the position you hope for! Lately, I was one of few students from the School of Media and Journalism to embark on a networking trip in New York City where I was able to make contacts with those UNC alumni who hold positions at credible agencies and firms, including BBDO and Wieden+Kennedy. Alumni understood the position I was in as a graduating senior and knew that they were once in my same shoes. By utilizing this network, I now have access to opportunities that can prove to be monumental when developing my career.

As you continue your college search and apply to various institutions, consider the success of the alumni that have matriculated at each respective institution and align that with your future career. At Carolina, 96% of the May 2016 graduates got jobs or entered graduate school within 6 months. Your success in school is just as important as your success after your undergraduate career.

Minor in entrepreneurship at Carolina!

In May 2017, The Shuford family gifted $18 million to the College of Arts & Sciences to more than double the size of Carolina’s entrepreneurship minor.

The Shuford Program in Entrepreneurship offers Carolina students the opportunity to learn entrepreneurial skills in order to launch their dream ventures. The minor is fulfilled after completing four courses, an internship and a capstone course. Currently, students are given nine different track options, allowing them to explore specific categories of entrepreneurship that they are interested in.
