Learning to Lead By Serving Others
A Carolina education will do more than prepare you for professional and intellectual leadership. It prepares you specifically for the kind of ethical and responsible leadership that contributes to the well-being of the community, the society, and the world. Our long legacy of public service is something we take seriously; after all, we touch the lives of thousands of people every year through our service programs and activities. And we contribute more volunteers to organizations such as the Peace Corps and Teach for America than most other private and public universities in the country.
From mentoring a local middle-school child from Durham, N.C. through our APPLES program or improving economic development in Uganda through the Campus Y, there are countless ways at Carolina to engage with the world. We also offer the Public Service Scholars (PSS) program which supports undergraduates who want to strengthen their commitment to serving communities throughout the state, the nation and the world.
In 2009, the Corporation for National and Community Service named Carolina to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll With Distinction for service efforts. Carolina was honored for its overall commitment to public service. During the 2007-2008 academic year, more than 18,000 students at Carolina engaged in 1.1 million service hours across the world.
“Last summer, I interned at the Olympics in Beijing. It’s difficult
to capture in words how important that experience was to my self development
and how much more aware of the world I now am. Because of this experience, I’m closer to becoming the person I’ve always wanted to be—a world citizen who is
able to help others.”
