Getting Started: Introduction to Carolina's Scholarships and Financial
Aid
Carolina continues to be recognized for its exceptional value.
We’ve
been named "best value" in the nation by Kiplinger's Personal
Finance for six consecutive years, and US News and World Report named
Carolina 11th in the nation for least debt among students.
Our scholarship
and aid program aims to recruit exceptionally talented students, while ensuring
that a Carolina education is accessible and affordable to all. Our tuition
and fees are among the lowest nationwide for flagship universities, and we
offer financial assistance in the form of:
- Scholarships - Money you may be awarded, based on
academic excellence or a combination of academic achievement and financial
need.
- Need-based grants - Money you may be awarded, based on financial need,
from federal, state, and University funds.
- Jobs -
Money you can earn through work-study on campus, in community service
agencies, or off-campus jobs.
- Loans -
Money you borrow from University loan
programs and outside lenders.
- Carolina Covenant -
A special University program that enables
eligible students whose family income is less than 200 percent of the federal
poverty guidelines to graduate
debt-free.
Through these various forms of assistance, Carolina meets 100 percent
of demonstrated need—typically 65 percent from grants and just
35 percent from loans—for
all enrolling students who apply for aid on time.
Merit-based Scholarships
When you apply for admission, you are automatically considered for several
prestigious scholarships, which are awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding
academic achievement, strong curiosity and leadership skills, and (in some
cases) financial need.
Only three scholarships require a separate application:
- The Pogue
Scholarship application, which
is due December 5 for North Carolina residents and January 5 for non-residents.
- The Thomas Wolfe
scholarship, which is for students interested in creative
writing.
- The Donald Jacobs Scholarship, which is for students from New York City.
- Additionally, students who are interested in the Robertson
Scholarship can complete a Supplemental Information form.
These scholarships provide students with diverse resources, including financial
support, summer internships, and international travel. Hundreds of scholarships
are offered through the Morehead, Robertson, Johnston , Carolina Scholars,
Pogue, William Richardson Davie, Old Well, College Fellows, UNC Campus Scholarships,
and National Merit programs.
Need-based Scholarships
While offering competitive tuition rates, we also offer need-based aid in
the form of federal, state, and University grants; loans; and employment.
With the Carolina Covenant,
eligible students whose family income is less than 200 percent of the federal
poverty guidelines can graduate from Carolina without having to borrow a penny--100
percent of their demonstrated need is met through grants and federal work-study.
To apply for need-based scholarships, complete the FAFSA and the CSS/PROFILE
by March 1.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Title IV Code Number – 002974
When you complete the FAFSA, you will automatically be considered
for Federal Pell and Federal Supplemental Grants, Federal Work-Study jobs,
and Federal Perkins and Stafford Loans. You may obtain the FAFSA from your
high school counselor, from the Office
of Scholarships and Student Aid,
and online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You
must submit the FAFSA to the federal processing agency after January 1,
2006. There is no fee for processing the FAFSA. We strongly encourage you
to complete the FAFSA online.
CSS/PROFILE Application
UNC-Chapel Hill Code Number – 5816
To be considered for the University's need-based scholarships and grants,
including the Carolina Covenant, complete the CSS/PROFILE Application
of the College Scholarship Service. The CSS/PROFILE
is available at
www.collegeboard.com.
Many questions on the CSS/PROFILE are also included
on the FAFSA, but the CSS/PROFILE collects additional information about
the financial circumstances of you and your family so that University scholarships
and grants can be awarded to students who meet special requirements for
these funds.
