Assured Admission: Dual Degree in Environment and Science Communication

Academic Program Overview
This joint program offered by the Curriculum in Environment and Ecology and the School of Media and Journalism gives students a broad understanding of the most critical environmental issues of our day, as well as the skills in PR, photography, broadcast journalism, writing, or graphic design to bring these issues to light.

Degree Specifics: Students can complete both a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies and a Master of Arts in Mass Communication in as little as five years.

Possible Careers: Whether you want to help others understand the intricacies of science, or you want to craft messages that inspire others to take action, you’ll be on a fast-track to exciting careers in nonprofits, eco-conscious businesses, or media organizations.

Assured Admission Details
Students typically apply for enrollment in the master’s program during their third year at UNC. As an assured admission student, you will gain early exposure to this competitive program as a first-year student and be provided with the following:

  • An opportunity to take two special courses in your first year – MEJO 153: News Writing, and an honors section of ENEC 201: Introduction to Environment and Society. These courses are not normally open to first-year students.
  • Enrollment assistance for other MEJO courses ahead of other non-MEJO majors
  • More flexibility to study abroad, conduct original research, and engage in experiential learning because of your early start in the program
  • A faculty mentor to help guide you through career decisions

First-year students who join this program are under no obligation to pursue the dual degree if their interests lead them elsewhere.

* Assured Admission to Environment and Science Communication is only available to students who apply for and are admitted through Early Action.
