We want to help students make their marks on a world that needs them. Through Excel@Carolina, we’re able to connect our most talented first-year students with some of our best resources.
One great thing about Excel@Carolina is that you don’t even have to apply. All first-year applicants are considered for this program based on their application for admission. If you’re selected for one or more of these special opportunities, we’ll ask you to rank the ones that interest you most. Then our admissions staff and faculty will match you with the programs that best fit your talents and interests. Check out our frequently-asked questions to learn more.
Assured Admission into Kenan-Flagler Business School
Beyond being assured a place in the Undergraduate Business Program as a sophomore or junior, you will secure enrollment in our unique Assured Admission Program. As a member of this program, you will participate in a yearlong academic seminar providing you with leadership development, the opportunity to learn about the various dimensions of studying business, and the chance to explore career and professional development through the exploration of “the World of Work.” Students in the Assured Admission Program have access to a variety of Kenan-Flagler resources and regularly interact with faculty, staff, current business students, alumni, and corporate partners. (Assured Business is only offered to students admitted under Early Action.)
Assured Admission into the School of Journalism and Mass Communication
Get assured admission in the undergraduate journalism program in your junior year. You’ll have the opportunity to take two special courses in your first year so you can start pursuing your interest in journalism right away. These courses will also prepare you for expanded curriculum choices and opportunities as you complete your journalism degree.
Assured Admission into the Eshelman School of Pharmacy
Get assured admission into the #2 ranked Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program in the country. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about patient-centered care, explore specialty areas of the field such as nuclear and veterinary pharmacy, and graduate with a degree that will set you up to be a leader in the pharmacy profession. (Assured Pharmacy is only offered to students admitted under Early Action.)
Carolina Research Scholars Program
Jump-start your journey into research. Meet other first-year students like yourself who are ready to engage in research and innovation; talk with peer advisors and Office for Undergraduate Research staff; and learn how to find research opportunities and research-intensive courses for every major at UNC-Chapel Hill. You just may be the one who discovers, creates, or invents the thing that revolutionizes the arts, humanities, social sciences, or any of the many other fields you can explore here at Carolina.
Carolina Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship
Follow your curiosity, innovate, and become a research entrepreneur. Through the Carolina Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (C-SURF), Excel@Carolina students receive a special opportunity to design their own research project and receive $5,000 to fund it. Through a special reception at the beginning of the fall semester, C-SURFs will also have the chance to meet distinguished faculty renowned for their work in the arts and humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences, as well as talk with staff from the Office for Undergraduate Research.
Chancellor’s Science Scholars
Take those blue-ribbon science fair project skills to the next level by preparing to become a leader in the sciences. You’ll work closely with world-renowned faculty who are leaders in their fields, benefit from specialized advising, receive mentorship on campus, and get assistance with advanced degree and career planning. Chancellor’s Science Scholars receive an annual merit scholarship in preparation for science PhD and MD/PhD programs. (Chancellor’s Science Scholars is only offered to students admitted under Early Action.)
First Year Fellows in the Johnston Center for Undergraduate Excellence
Connect with distinguished members of the Carolina community through a special Carolina “behind-the-scenes” series. You’ll be exposed to the many opportunities and resources available at Carolina and you’ll also be guaranteed a seat in one of your top-choice First Year Seminars.
Join a community of scholars who are looking for the most challenging and enriching experiences Carolina offers. You’ll get priority registration for more than 160 small Honors classes taught by award-winning professors. You’ll also have an opportunity to conduct original research alongside a faculty mentor, study abroad in Honors locations that ring the globe, and build personal relationships with students, professors, and alumni who are tackling the world’s greatest problems.
Pre-Enrollment for Buckley Public Service Scholars Program
Have a passion for service? By joining the Buckley Public Service Scholars program, you’ll have access to opportunities for leadership and skill development, Outward Bound scholarships, special service-learning course offerings and community-based activities. You’ll also participate in a special Excel@Carolina orientation with fellow first years who are committed to making a difference.
Summer Study Abroad Fellowship
Explore the world and expand your unique interests through summer study abroad. Summer Study Abroad Fellows receive a one-time award of $5,000 to be used towards summer study through a UNC-approved program.
