FAQs for Students with a Waitlist Decision

For those of you who received an offer to be included on our waiting list, we’re sorry to ask you to wait even longer for your final decision. We know you have already waited so patiently, and we know how frustrating this can be – particularly for those of you who applied early action.

If you accept a place on our waiting list, we’ll consider you for any spaces that are available in the class after we hear back from our admitted students by the May 1 enrollment deadline. In the early part of May, we’ll determine how many spaces are available, and we’ll review the applications of all of the students who accepted a place on the waiting list. As the list is not ranked, we are not able to predict any student’s chances of admission. How many waitlisted students we can admit also varies a great deal from year to year. We won’t know for some time what this year will hold.

If we have additional space in the class, we’ll begin making offers to waitlisted students by the end of May. We may make several rounds of offers, but we promise to have a final decision to all students by the end of June.

You can find more information about the waiting list here. Please let us know if you have any other questions by writing to us at unchelp@admissions.unc.edu or by calling (919) 966-3621, Monday-Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 PM, EST.

Final Waitlist Update

Yesterday we released both the first-year and transfer waiting lists. All students can now log into their ConnectCarolina Student Center to view the updated decision.

As we shared last week, we had a very strong response from both our first-year and transfer admitted students this year and so unfortunately we have had very little room for waitlisted candidates. In all, we were able to admit fewer than 30 first-year students and fewer than 10 transfer students from the waiting list.

We’re sorry to disappoint so many students. The outcome of the waiting list is always unpredictable, and this year it ended up being much tougher than most. We wish you the very best at your chosen schools–we know you will do wonderful things there!

Please let us know if you have questions.

Waitlist Update

Thanks so much to all of you who have patiently waited for news about the waiting list. We understand how difficult the waiting can be, and we’re grateful to you for hanging in there with us. We had a very strong response from admitted students this year, so that unfortunately means that we are not expecting to be able to admit many students from either our first-year or transfer waiting lists.

On Friday, we did make a very small wave of offers to students from the first-year waiting list. These students received an email notifying them that a new decision was available to view on ConnectCarolina. They’ll also receive official letters through the mail this week. If we’re able to make additional offers, we’ll let students know as soon as possible. However, as the class is just about at capacity, we don’t anticipate being able to make many, if any, additional offers. We’ll let all students know a final decision as soon as we can, by June 30 at the latest.

We have not taken any action on the transfer waiting list, and it’s unlikely we’ll be able to make many offers. This may, in fact, be the rare year when we’re not able to admit any students from that waiting list. And while we’re grateful for the strong interest from our admitted students, we are sorry to disappoint the students who accepted a place on the waiting list in hopes of joining the class.

If you’re curious about how we select students from the waiting list, please see our FAQs for first-years or transfers. We don’t rank the list in any way, so all students who accept a place on the waiting list are considered for any spaces that are available.

Please let us know what questions you have. Thanks again.
