“Very, very few people ever regret studying abroad, and it’s an incredible way to see some of the world and experience life and learning in a different way than you’re used to.”

CJ Miles from Charlotte, North Carolina

UNC Environmental Sustainability in Australia; Townsville, Australia

Why you picked this program: I’ve always been really into environmental science and specifically sustainability, and this trip gave me a great opportunity to study these in a uniquely hands-on way, outside of a traditional classroom setting. Australia is an awesome place to study the environment, and is so full of unique ecosystems and opportunities for sustainability, so this program really stood out as something I wanted to be a part of.

Favorite memory from abroad: A major appeal was how much we traveled within the program. This included living on a boat on different part of the Reef for 3 days, which was definitely my favorite memory. We dove or snorkeled about 3-4 times a day, some to monitor the reef’s health through notes and surveys and some just to have fun being in the water and seeing so many amazing things. Living on a boat with 22 people ended up being a really cool experience, and we were all close by then so it was an awesome way to end the trip — genuinely unlike anything I had ever done before.

Advice to students who want to study abroad: It’s definitely worth the experience no matter where you go, and it’s really unlike anything you’ll ever have the opportunity to do again. Don’t let missing a semester at UNC or taking up a summer be a deciding factor whether or not to go. Very, very few people ever regret studying abroad, and it’s an incredible way to see some of the world and experience life and learning in a different way than you’re used to.
