My most memorable experience

Wilderness Adventures for First Year Students helped me move out of my comfort zone and into the comfort zone of "college."

I think that a great thing to throw into my “memorable experience” bag would be my trip that I took with Carolina Adventures after my summer orientation for school. The program was/is called Wilderness Adventures for First Year Students.

I am so glad that I decided to participate in the program. It helped me move out of my comfort zone, and, at the same time, move into the comfort zone of “college.”

WAFFYS was a several day hiking expedition with other first year students in the mountains of North Carolina. We were trained by a professional but led ourselves.

We were able to push ourselves as far as we wanted and go where we wanted on the trails. We had the opportunity to make it our own adventure, and, not to be too obnoxious, that sense of adventurism is what college is supposed to be about.

Ok, I feel like I am writing stuff that is better suited for a brochure than a letter from a real student.

Dirt. Sweat. Heat. Flies that look like bees. Those were all part of the trip, too, but it seemed so much more “memorable” with all the mushy talk at the beginning.

Seriously, though, if you come to Carolina, I would really encourage you to participate in this program. You don’t have to be Joe Athlete to do it. You will thank yourself, feel really accomplished, and get to meet me in person at the WAFFYS dinner in the fall (the last reason should clinch the deal).

Email me with questions about UNC.
