How do I claim North Carolina residency?

North Carolina residency determines whether your application for admission will be evaluated as an in-state or out-of-state student, as well as the tuition you will pay if you enroll at any of the constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina (UNC) System, including Carolina. To claim residency, you must submit a residency application to the North Carolina Residency Determination Service (RDS). They will provide you with a Residency Certification Number (RCN), which you can then provide as part of your application for admission. We’d recommend completing your residency application as soon as possible, and you can complete it even before you start your application for admission to Carolina.
