Questions about the First-Year Waiting List

If you’re offered a position on our waiting list, we hope this information will help you make the decision that’s right for you – whether it’s accepting our offer to be on the waiting list or choosing another school that’s a good fit for you. If you decide to join our waiting list, please remember to go to your MyCarolina status page to accept your waiting list offer by Friday, April 19, 2019.

If you applied Early Action and decided to join the waiting list, your deadline to accept your waiting list offer in your MyCarolina status page was Friday, February 22, 2019.

When will I receive my final decision from the waiting list?
We may make several rounds of offers, but we promise to notify students of their final decision no later than June 30.

What are my chances of being admitted from the waiting list?
Unfortunately, we are not able to predict any student’s chance of being admitted. Nonetheless, we’ve provided our three most recent years of waiting list admission data. Overall, the number of students we’ve been able to offer admission from the waiting list has been small.

Are candidates on the waiting list ranked? Do you prioritize students who applied for the Early Action deadline?
Candidates on the waiting list are not ranked. Which deadline a student has applied for is not a factor in our decision, and we’ll review all students on the waiting list independent of when they applied.

If spaces become available, how will candidates be reviewed?
If spaces become available, we’ll review only those candidates who have accepted their offer to be on the waiting list. We will take into account our previous evaluation of their credentials as well as their final grades, if those grades are available.

Please note: Candidates who do not indicate that they wish to remain on the waiting list will not be considered and will receive no further decision.

Will an interview or additional letters of recommendation affect my chances of being admitted from the waiting list?
Unfortunately, we will not be able to interview our waiting list candidates. Should spaces become available, our review will focus primarily on your original application and on any additional grades you may submit.

What, if any, additional information should I submit?
Please ensure we have your most updated senior grades. If your school year ends before we notify you of your final decision, please send us your final transcript. Beyond these updated and/or final grades, we do not recommend that you send additional materials.

What else should I do?
Again, to be considered for any spaces that may become available, you must indicate that you wish to accept a place on our waiting list in your MyCarolina status page.

As you wait for a final decision from us, it is important for you to select another college or university, notify that institution of your intent to enroll, and send that institution your enrollment deposit by its specified deadline if an enrollment deposit is required.

If admitted, will I be eligible for financial aid and campus housing?
We recommend that you submit the FAFSA and CSS/PROFILE need-based aid forms as soon as possible. Grants, lower-interest loans, and funds for campus jobs are limited. Please see http://studentaid.unc.edu/ for additional information. If you are admitted, you should complete and submit the application for campus housing as soon as possible at housing.unc.edu. All first-year students, regardless of admission date, will be housed on campus or in Granville Towers.

If I’ve accepted my invitation to join the waiting list, and decide to go elsewhere, how do I remove myself from the waitlist?
Please call us at (919) 966-3621 or email us at uncsubmit@admissions.unc.edu to let us know. We’re grateful for your interest in Carolina and wish you the best of luck!
